Tips for Easily Styling Your Photo Session
What should we wear? I get this question a lot! It can feel overwhelming at first, but once you read the tips below, I hope you find the process fun and a bit less daunting.
WHAT TO DO…
1.) Pick your color pallet. What colors are your dawn to? What colors are in your home? What colors do you feel good in. Remember these are images are going to decorate your walls…what would compliment your space? When in doubt, I usually encourage people to lean into neutrals; ivory (not white), beige, camel, chocolate brown, rust, olive green to name a few. These colors are timeless, typically compliment any location and can easily be paired with pops of color if that’s your jam.
2.) Who booked this session? Who is spending hours styling this session? Who will pack snacks the day of the session? Who will pick the images that get hung on the wall? I’m willing to bet, 9 times out of 10, this is all the same person…MOM! Mama’s start with your outfit, I want you feeling great! I recommend dresses and I especially love fabrics that have movement, texture or catch the light.
3.) Stick to one pattern then find other pieces with colors from that pattern for everyone else. This will help you tie it all together. Not everyone is going to be in the “cute” outfit, and that is okay! What matters is how it all looks together as a cohesive ensemble. The week before your session lay everything out together on the bed and see how it’s all coming together. This will give you time to find alternate options if something is looking off. Also, this is a great opportunity to send a pic of your outfits to your photographer (ME!). I’m here to help!
4. Don’t underestimate the power of a simple henley for the boys. Feel free to pair it with a complimentary sweater or jacket to change it up and offer variety to your gallery.
5.) Remember the shoes and accessories. Your every day sneaker just isn’t going to cut it. Also, consider bringing along some accessories to help complete the look and offer your gallery some variety; hats, shawls, sweaters, you get the idea.
WHAT NOT TO DO…
1.) Multiple patterns and/or everyone in matching plaid.
2.) Clothing that requires a lot of adjusting.
3.) Sports wear or clothing with logos.
4.) Fabric with fine lines can have a dizzying effect
5.) Super bold color and pastel colors, not great.
6.) Sneakers.
7.) Polo shirts.
