A Friend Along the Way

I met this sweet mama early in my photography journey. We have both grown a lot as artists and as friends since then. She is my go to when I’m having trouble editing or trudging through uncharted waters on the business front. We even went on a couple photography retreats together this year. Every year we exchange sessions and it’s always a great reminder regarding how much work goes into being in front of the camera.

Lately, I’ve been digging into my intention. What’s the “thing” about this art that I have had a difficult time naming, the “thing” that keeps me wanting to continue even when things aren’t easy. Why do some sessions light my soul on fire, while others are pretty pictures? Seeing Diana with her people brought it all together for me.

For me photography is more than pretty pictures, though that part is lovely too. For me, it’s about tapping into people’s connections. To do that, I intentionally slow down and create a space for people to do what they naturally feel called to do. If you are looking to feel more out of your images, my advice is this; play with your kids, touch their cheek, smell their hair, hold their little hands and think about how they will only be this little once. These days can be long, but the years are short.

Mom and Dad look down at son
Mama sneaks a kiss on daughters nose
Kids hug their parents, little girl wraps herself in moms dress to keep warm from wind
Mom spins her little girl on a mountain top at sunset
Dad helps his daughter climb an oak tree
Mother and son hold hands and connect at sunset
Little girl climbs tree in cute skirt and body suit
